Ashwini Kumaras Birth Story
Sun and Sandhya Devi (Sanjana) are married. Sandhya could not bear the heat from Sun.
Sandhya made a clone of her called Chaya and left it at Sun's place and Sandhya went into hiding. Chaya and Sun got a son, called Saturn (Shani).
After a few days, Sun got to know that Chaya is a clone and not the original Sandhya. Sun went and met VishwaKarma (Chitra Nakshatra), the father of Sandhya.
VishwaKarma marginally cuts the heat of Sun (Sun debilitates in Libra, which starts with Chitra nakshatra 3rd pada). Sun and Sandhya unite again. Chaya goes into temporary hiding. Yama and Yami (twins: brother and sister) are born to Sandhya.
Sandhya once again starts to feel the heat of Sun and runs away, reaches a farm field and takes the form of a horse. Chaya comes back once again in place of Sandhya.
Sun gets to know about this and reaches Sandhya once again dressed in the form of a horse. As they mate, Ashwini Kumaras are born from the nostrils of Sandhya in the form of horse.
Chyavana – Sukanya – Dadichi – Ashwinis Story
Chyavana Maharshi (often referred as Ayurvedic Rishi) is the son of Puloma and Bhrigu. Sukanya is a very young wife of a very old Chyavana.
Ashwinis are very young, dynamic, fast on horse riding and charming. They were known in the village (Grama) as healers who healed people of various ailments, made them back young again.
Ashwinis were denied the entry into heaven (Swarga Loka) as they were born on Earth, despite being children of Sun and Sanjana.
Dadhichi Maharsha is the child of Chayavana and Sukanya, who was preparing Soma Rasa (Amrutam) and gave it to Indra and other deities in Swarga. Soma Rasa is one means to gaining entry into the heaven.
One day Ashwinis appeared in front Sukanya. She was mesmerized with the beauty (smartness) of Ashwinis. Ashwinis promised to make Chayvana young and charming, if they had the Soma Rasa of Dadhichi given to them.
However, Indra got to know this at the last moment and threatened Dadhichi – not to offer Soma Rasa to anybody other than devatas. Dadichi denies Soma Rasa at the last moment to Ashwinis.
Few years later, Dadhichi's bones were to be used as raw material in developing the weapon (Vajra ayudha) for Indra. Dadichi gave Soma Rasa and made Ashwinis as devatas.
